Bursitis

Bursitis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of a synovial bursa. Synovial bursae are small fluid-filled sacs found in joints and surrounding tissues that help reduce friction between different anatomical structures, such as tendons, muscles, and bones, during movement. When one of these sacs becomes inflamed, bursitis develops.

Bursitis can affect different parts of the body, but it is most common in joints subject to repetitive motion or constant pressure. Joints often involved in bursitis include the shoulders, elbows, knees, hips, and heels (for example, Achilles tendon bursitis).
