What is tennis elbow?

“Tennis elbow” is a medical condition also known as lateral epicondylitis. It affects the lateral epicondyle, which is the bony prominence on the outer side of the elbow. This condition is commonly associated with pain and inflammation of the tendons connecting the forearm muscles to the lateral epicondyle.

Causes of tennis elbow

Tennis elbow gets its name from its association with the repetitive efforts and arm movements typical of the sport of tennis. However, this condition can affect anyone, even those who do not play tennis. It is often associated with occupations or activities that require heavy lifting or repetitive use of the hands and wrist.

Symptoms

Typical symptoms of tennis elbow include pain in the outer elbow area, weakness in grip and pain that may radiate to the forearm. The pain is often worse when using the arm, such as when lifting heavy objects, playing sports or even simply operating a pen.

FIT Therapy Technology and treatment protocols.

The treatment of tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, depends on the severity of the symptoms and the patient’s response to different approaches. In general, the treatment of tennis elbow starts with conservative approaches, but in more severe or persistent cases, other treatment options may be considered. Here are some of the treatment methods commonly used:

  1. Rest: Reducing or eliminating activities that trigger pain is often the first step in treating tennis elbow. Rest allows the tendons to heal.
  2. Application of ice: Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce inflammation. It is advisable to apply ice for 15-20 minutes, several times a day.
  3. Physical therapy: A physiotherapist can develop a specific exercise programme to strengthen the forearm muscles and improve flexibility. Physical therapy may also include postural and movement re-education techniques.
  4. Manual therapy: Certain manual therapy techniques, such as massage or joint mobilisation, can help reduce tension and pain in the elbow area.
  5. Ultrasound or shockwave therapy: These physical therapies can be used to promote healing of inflamed tissue.
  6. Braces or supports: The use of elbow braces or supports can help reduce tension on the tendons and provide support during activity.

The treatment of tennis elbow can take time, so it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions and be patient during the recovery process. Relapse prevention is often based on changes in activity and sporting gestures, as well as regular strengthening and stretching exercises. Always consult a medical professional for a specific diagnosis and treatment plan.
