What is whiplash?
Whiplash, also known as ‘whiplash syndrome’ or ‘whiplash’ in English, is a common neck injury that occurs as a result of a rapid flexion and extension movement of the neck, similar to how one would be hit with a whip.
Causes of whiplash
This injury is often associated with traffic accidents, particularly car accidents, but can also occur in other situations where there is a rapid change in acceleration or deceleration.
Symptoms
The main symptoms of whiplash include:
- Neck pain: Pain is the most common symptom and is often described as a feeling of tension or stiffness in the back of the neck.
- Headache: Pain may radiate from the back of the neck to the head, causing headaches.
- Reduced mobility: Whiplash can temporarily limit the ability to turn or bend the neck.
- Shoulder pain: Some people experience shoulder or arm pain following whiplash.
- Tingling or numbness: In some cases, whiplash may cause tingling or numbness in the arms or hands.
- Fatigue: Some people with whiplash may feel tired or fatigued.
FIT Therapy Technology and treatment protocols.
The treatment of whiplash, or whiplash syndrome, aims to reduce pain and promote healing of the neck and surrounding structures. Treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms and may vary from case to case. Here are some of the main treatment options for whiplash:
- Rest: Reducing physical activity and giving the neck time to heal is often the first step in treating whiplash. Avoid abrupt neck movements.
- Application of ice: Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Apply ice for 15-20 minutes, several times a day.
- Physiotherapy: Physical therapy can be essential for recovery. A physiotherapist can develop a specific exercise programme to strengthen the neck muscles, improve mobility and reduce stiffness.
- Manual therapy: Therapeutic massage or manual therapy can help reduce tension and pain in the neck.
- Neck support: In some cases, the doctor may recommend the use of a cervical collar to provide support and stability for the neck during the initial phase of treatment. However, prolonged use of the cervical collar is not recommended, as it can lead to muscle weakness.
- Complementary therapies: Some people find relief from whiplash through complementary therapies such as acupuncture or chiropractic treatment. Consult your doctor before trying such therapies.
- Gradual return to activity: After a rest phase, your doctor can guide you through a gradual return to normal physical activity to avoid complications.
It is important to consult a medical professional for an accurate diagnosis and a specific treatment plan. If whiplash symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment, your doctor may recommend further evaluation or diagnostic tests. Early and appropriate management of whiplash is crucial to prevent long-term complications.
Treatment method with FIT Therapy Cervical Patch
The FIT Therapy Cervical Patch can be used to treat painful whiplash-related events.
It proves to be a valid natural alternative to the use of medication or devices that release heat.
Instructions for proper application (also watch the video tutorial):
- Remove the patch from the base.
- Apply the patch to the cervical area and dry, clean, hair-free skin
- Wait about two minutes for better adhesion of the patch to the skin.
- Keep the patch applied for 5 days.
- Continue the therapy until an improvement in symptoms is observed.
The patch retains its function even when wet (e.g., during a shower).
